London Bridge – Lake Havasu City, AZ

London Bridge, Lake Havasu City

As a kid in the ’50s we used to sing ‘London Bridge is falling down’. In fact, it wasn’t falling down it was sinking. Lake Havasu City was created in 1964 so nothing is over 50. The developer bought London Bridge, dismantled it and shipped it into the desert in Arizona and developed a city of 200,000 people around it. For years it was rumoured he thought he was buying Tower Bridge but that has recently been confirmed as fallacy. So the stones of London Bridge are a façade over a purposed designed modern concrete arch bridge. I don’t know whether London Bridge masonry was recut to fit the new bridge or the new bridge was tightly designed so the London bridge masonry fitted neatly. It is not near the eyesore that I thought it would be.
